about
Stevenson Valentor & Samsara is an improvisational jazz band centered on the Buddhist concept of cyclic existence, Samsara. Our music's purpose it to re-create the wheel of cyclic existence, and to transcend the suffering connected with the cyclic existence.
We sonically re-create the image of Samsara through communicating with each other musically in the language of jazz, demonstrating spirit as intangible, non-physical vibratory energy.
As we improvise the music as a group, we demonstrate how all humans may gather and spontaneously create with harmonious spiritual fire. Our music is without vocals and lyrics, enabling our listeners to transcend the dualities and harmful ideologies connected with our language. As musicians and listeners are collectively elevated beyond the ideologies articulated with words, we work toward transcending the suffering in Samsara.
This track is from the live improvisational performance we gave at Life Force Arts Center on September 21, 2013. The sections of that performance were 3 Poisons, Humans, Gods, Demi-Gods, Animals, Hungry Ghosts, Hell and Human Reprise.
Ascending out of hell, we conclude where we began: as humans contemplating existence. Most significant to human life are the powers of intention, contemplation, and deliberate action. Rebirth as a God is dominated by attachment to tranquility and luxury, and rebirth in lower realms such as hungry ghosts or hell-beings is dominated by anguish and torture. Humans are in the middle of either pole of existences: we feel great contrast between pleasure and suffering within our lives, and so we may come to settle into Buddha’s middle path, in which we avoid extremes, and avoid attachment to all things impermanent.
