I first became aware of Hans and Sophie Scholl in February of 2014. A brother and sister in their early 20s studying in Munich during the second world war. Together with fellow students as well as a professor, they acted in secret as The White Rose - a group committed to the resistance and destruction of the Nazi party. They hand copied leaflets composed by the members of the group by the thousands calling for the spiritual and moral awakening of Germany - leaving them in mailboxes, public spaces, trains and anywhere they could get to under cover of night. During a daring mission to their own university in broad daylight they attempted to leave their messages in the halls between classes, and were caught as well as immediately arrested. Their trial was swift and merciless, sentencing the siblings and their fellow White Rose member Christoph Probst to death by beheading. Reading about the Scholl siblings astounded me, How these people found a principle courage so deep despite any and all fears that would break down the strongest wills can be summed up in Sophie's final words at the age of 22 - "It Is such a splendid sunny day, and I have to go"
